Back in the day, living rooms were built to be massive spaces - usually the biggest rooms in the house. Step into any Victorian home and you’ll see the difference in size between the living areas there and in a new-build.

Living rooms have got smaller, making it harder for you to…well…live in them! Everything can feel super cramped unless you get rid of all the furniture. Great, you’ve dealt with the crampedness, but now it feels empty and devoid of character.

Today, you’ll see three space-saving hacks for your living room that let you make it stylish without feeling too cramped.

Use the walls

The walls in your living room are perfect for helping you save space. There are many ways to use them, but the simplest is by pushing furniture up against them. Instead of planting your sofa in the middle of the room, move it up against a wall. Immediately, you have loads of floor space to play with.

It can make room for a lovely small coffee table, and this trick is perfect if you have a modern corner sofa. Placing it literally in the corner will let you have a big sofa that doesn’t take up too much room. As a bonus, mount your TV on the wall to save space down below and get a smaller TV unit.

Utilise vertical storage

What is vertical storage? Basically, it’s an idea that storage is used vertically rather than horizontally. As such, you technically take up less space in your living room. Rather than having a big long wall unit for storage, swap it for a thin bookshelf.

Here, you have something that takes up a fraction of the space yet retains all the storage capabilities. It’s very clever, and the same tactic can be applied to things like vertical shelving or hanging storage baskets from the ceiling.

Get nesting furniture

Nesting furniture refers to any type of furniture that provides multiple pieces all fitting within one another. The best example in a living room setting is a set of nesting tables. You have the main coffee table, but under it are a couple of smaller side tables. They fit compactly together, taking up hardly any space. Then, when you need a side table, just slide one out and put it by the sofa.

Stuff like this is genius as your living room doesn’t end up cluttered with loads of different tables or pieces of furniture that won’t be needed all the time. But, you have extra things in case guests come around.

There’s no doubt that these three ideas will help you save space in your living room. It’s all about figuring out how to open up the floor space and make the area feel less cramped. You can do this with three simple tips, but think about other ideas that might spring to mind. Perhaps furniture with built-in storage is a good idea? Maybe you have the money/ability to build shelves or storage units flush into your walls? The possibilities are endless, proving that even the smallest living rooms can feel bigger.
