Our excuse? Not that one was needed, but Patisserie Valerie is going through a bit of an update at the moment and the refreshed new menu was ready for us to sample - and I wasn't going to turn down such a mouthwatering offering now, was I?!
Resorts World is good if you want to go somewhere a bit different for something to eat, with a good selection of restaurants, including the very spacious Patisserie Valerie. There's discount shops too to look around, but be mindful of the parking cost - £2.50 for up to two hours, £16 thereafter up to 12 hours - although if you spend £20 or more at Resorts World, you can validate your parking so you only pay the lower fee (top tip!).
So, on to the new menu...
There's a great selection of breakfast and brunch foods, served all day, including a full breakfast plate, a vegan option packed full with avocado and hummus, porridge and every kind of egg dish. There's also a good range of new lunch options too. I opted for eggs royale, my Mother-in-Law the porridge with blueberries, banana and maple syrup, to be washed down with a coffee and a hot chocolate.
And boy, were my eggs good! Sat on a brioche bun, there was a generous helping of smoked salmon, two poached eggs and a generous dollop of hollandaise sauce. Creamy, rich and very satisfying. The porridge was also creamy and delicious, so I am told, and we both enjoyed the options we chose.
But we didn't stop there - no, a visit to Patisserie Valerie isn't complete without, well, a slice of cake or some patisserie. After being introduced to the updated and improved selection - butter has been brought back and the emphasis is on premium ingredients and taste, rather than anything too large or heavy - we had to make our choices, which was pretty difficult to say the least.
I almost when for the coffee eclair (first dipped in white chocolate, don't you know) but the black forest gateau was calling me, and my Mother in Law chose a slice of Mille-Feuille. Mine was rich with depth of flavour but a surprisingly light sponge, and hers was buttery and 'scrumptious' apparently.
We couldn't resist a look at the celebration cakes available too - they were serious works of art and very reasonably priced, given the craftsmanship and how different and premium they are in comparison to typical shop bought cakes.
It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours and we relished every mouthful. As a treat or somewhere to go for a special occasion, I'd really recommend a visit to Patisserie Valerie; the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere comfortable and you can really indulge your sweet tooth.
